![]() ![]() The phrase "Pale Blue Dot" was coined by Sagan in his reflections on the photograph's significance, documented in his 1994 book of the same name. ![]() ![]() Voyager 1, which had completed its primary mission and was leaving the Solar System, was commanded by NASA to turn its camera around and take one last photograph of Earth across a great expanse of space, at the request of astronomer and author Carl Sagan. In the photograph, Earth's apparent size is less than a pixel the planet appears as a tiny dot against the vastness of space, among bands of sunlight reflected by the camera. Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of planet Earth taken on February 14, 1990, by the Voyager 1 space probe from a record distance of about 6 billion kilometers ( 3.7 billion miles, 40.5 AU), as part of that day's Family Portrait series of images of the Solar System. Seen from about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles), Earth appears as a tiny dot within deep space: the blueish-white speck almost halfway up the rightmost band of light. ![]() ![]() ![]() Even at the highest levels of management, employment in the tourism industry has long been dominated by women. For decades western European tourists have flocked to Bulgaria’s beautiful beaches and mountains tourism is today one of the few successful-and expanding-sectors of the country’s economy. This compelling ethnography of women working in Bulgaria’s popular sea and ski resorts challenges the idea that women have consistently fared worse than men in Eastern Europe’s transition from socialism to a market economy. In times past she would have no recourse but to die death after death until one sticks-these gold-blooded girls are immortal but for one specific death, which is individual to each-but Deka luckily has another option. This type of laugh seemed stronger to me, as they would be laughing at something they chose, rather than being told exactly when to laugh.” In this short set, he performs a number of deliberately botched or otherwise askew magic tricks, using his tone to generate the humor. “If I kept denying them the formality of a punch line,” as he writes more than 40 years later in B orn Standing Up, “the audience would eventually pick their own place to laugh, essentially out of desperation. Still, it’s safe to say that its audience had never seen any performer – and certainly not any prop comic - quite like Martin before. Though the studio audience may look pretty square by today’s standards (or even those of the late 1960s), The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour had already built a reputation for pushing the envelope of mainstream television comedy. Apocalypse and it came through in the pages and dialogue. There is minimal effort given in writing A.I. No matter how much William Hertling wanted to write a good story or had good ideas, there is simply no way that he can look someone in the eye and said that he did his best writing this book.
